Dhamma Talks

“Today is the day for presenting gifts to the nuns who have successfully passed various examinations.
Many people strive to support and honour them for their success in the exams. This means supporting Pariyatti (the study of the Dhamma).
As the Buddha taught, the Sāsana (the Buddha’s Dispensation) consists of three parts:
  1. Pariyatti – learning and study;
  2. Paṭipatti – practice and effort;
  3. Paṭiveda – the penetrating wisdom of realisation.
Thus, Pariyatti (learning) is the foundation. It is like the embankment of a lake. There must be an embankment. If there is an embankment, the water can remain within. If the water can remain within, lotuses can grow, and the lake becomes beautiful because of those lotuses.

Therefore, Pariyatti is like the embankment; Paṭipatti is like the water; Paṭiveda is like the lotus. For this reason, Pariyatti is the foundation. Learning is the foundation. If we abandon Pariyatti, we will not have sufficient knowledge to guide our practice.

For example, in the Buddha’s stories, the sages Kaladevila, Āḷāra Kālāma, and Udaka Rāmaputta were reborn in the formless realms. They could not control their jhānas to be reborn in a suitable abode—this was due to a lack of learning and a lack of instruction.

Because of these reasons, when we were young, our teachers, monks, abbots, and venerable ones would strive to gather requisites from all directions—such as robes, slippers, and so on—and offer them as gifts to the students who had passed their examinations.

Similarly, during the Buddha’s lifetime, the Blessed One offered a robe to Venerable Mahākassapa. He accepted it. After the Buddha’s Parinibbāna, Venerable Mahākassapa regarded that offering as a kind of debt from the Buddha, a debt he had to repay by convening the First Saṅgāyana (the First Buddhist Council).

So, because of this, giving such support as a tradition is not merely the giving of material things. It is also a kind of encouragement—to inspire everyone to study Pariyatti, and to perpetuate the Sāsana for future generations of disciples.

In this way, we preserve this tradition. And that is why, today, we are striving to support these learners and students, to support Pariyatti. If there is Pariyatti, there will be Paṭipatti and Paṭiveda. Thus, the world will become beautiful with the lotus of Paṭiveda—and all of this is grounded in Pariyatti.

This concludes today’s Dhamma talk.
Sādhu, sādhu, sādhu.”

      •  * 一是**三藏教法(Pariyatti)**,即学习;
      •  * 二是**修行正法(Patipatti)**,即实践;
      •  * 三是**证悟正法(Pativeda)**,即通达的智慧。
